Our 2014 conference was a special focus on developmental trauma and how it relates to nonviolent child-raising. Come participate in experiential workshops, learn new tools, and hear from leaders in both fields as they explain this revolutionary new way of understanding the factors that underlie many of our physical, mental and social problems.

Bette Lamont
Bette Lamont , M.A./D.M.T is a Certified Counselor with degrees in Education, Neurological Reorganization, and Movement Analysis. certified counselor.  She has worked with children and adult learning and behavioral issues throughout her career.  Bette has specialized in providing services for neurologically traumatized children adopted from orphanages, abused and abandoned by parents, children of failed abortions and alcoholic mothers, and has worked with approximately 5,000 children since 1987. She has served as a Developmental Movement Practitioner since 1986, and is Founder and  Executive Director of  Developmental Movement Consultants in Seattle, Washington.  She has been a Registered and Certified Counselor in Washington State since 1994.  Bette may be reached at www.developmentalmovement.org

Eileen Paris
Eileen Paris, Ph.D., Psy.D. is a training and supervising analyst and member of the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis, Los Angeles. Dr. Paris has been working with children and families for 47 years. She began her career as a pre-school teacher, became a somatic therapist, then a psychoanalyst and infant mental health specialist. She served on the faculty of the Reiss-Davis Child Study Center, and as adjunct faculty at the 2001-2012 Infant Mental Health Specialist Training Program at Cedars/Sinai in Los Angeles as well as the Santa Barbara Graduate Institute and the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis Los Angeles. She developed a psychoanalytically informed model of parent education called the Parenting Process and co-authored, “I’LL NEVER DO TO MY KIDS WHAT MY PARENTS DID TO ME!” A Guide to Conscious Parenting, (Warner Books, 1994).  Her paper entitled: Interrupting Trauma and Advancing Development: Considering Parent Education in Contemporary Psychoanalytic Treatment was published in the 2013 Clinical Social Work Journal. Dr. Paris is in private practice in Marina del Rey, California and offers workshops and trainings to parents and professionals that address developmental trauma in the US, Canada, and Europe.

Elaine Miller-Karas
Elaine Miller-Karas is the Executive Director and Co-founder of the Trauma Resource Institute, a nonprofit corporation. She has created projects to help underserved individuals and communities learn innovative biological based interventions that help build trauma-informed and resiliency-informed communities.   She has co-created the Trauma Resiliency Model and the Community Resiliency Model.  Ms. Miller-Karas has trained mental health professionals, teachers, parents, medical personnel, human rights workers in social service agencies, hospitals and community agencies in both models.
She has led the Haiti Earthquake Relief Project, sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, and co-led the Chinese Earthquake Relief Project co-sponsored by the World Health Organization. Her work has also taken her to Nairobi, Kenya where she worked with the Kenyan Association of Professional Counselors and introduced the Trauma Resiliency Model to the Grass Roots Women’s Conference to end Female Genital Mutilation.  She currently is spearheading a large California Mental Health Services Act Project in San Bernardino, California, bringing the Community Resiliency Model to underserved groups including veterans.
Ms. Miller-Karas has presented at many conferences, including ISTSS, the Psychotherapy Networker, and the University of Colorado’s annual conference on World Affairs.   She authored a chapter in the book, To the Rescue: Stories of Healthcare Workers at the Scenes of Disaster. Ms. Miller-Karas’ book the Trauma Resiliency Model will be released in 2014.

Gabriella Grant
Gabriella Grant is the director of the California Center of Excellence for Trauma Informed Care, overseeing the Center’s research, program and professional development as well as policy analysis activities.  Her background includes heading the nation’s first community corrections-based victim advocacy program and running a three-year project funded by the California Department of Public Health to increase access to domestic violence shelters by women with mental health and/or substance abuse issues.  Gabriella trains and consults with a wide variety of publicly funded agencies nationwide, including domestic violence shelters, foster care agencies, youth shelters, juvenile detention centers and more to help make the more trauma informed.

Janina Fisher
Janina Fisher, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice, the Assistant Director of the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute, an Instructor at the Trauma Center, a research and treatment center founded by Bessel van der Kolk, former president of the New England Society for the Treatment of Trauma and Dissociation, and a former instructor, Harvard Medical School.  An international writer and lecturer on the treatment of trauma, she is co-author with Pat Ogden of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy: Interventions for Attachment and Trauma (in press) and author of the forthcoming book, Healing the Fragmented Selves of Trauma Survivors (in press).  Dr. Fisher has been an invited speaker at the Cape Cod Institute, Harvard Medical School Conference on Women and Summer and Winter Conference Series, EMDR International Association Conference, Psychotherapy Networker Symposium, University of Wisconsin, the University of Westminster in London, the Psychotraumatology Institute of Europe, and the Alternatives to Violence Conference in Norway.  Dr. Fisher lectures and teaches nationally and internationally on topics related to the integration of the neurobiological research and newer trauma treatment paradigms into traditional therapeutic modalities.  More information can be found on her website: www.janinafisher.com.

Joel Andres
Joel Andres is a Marriage and Family Therapist with a private practice in Beverly Hills, California. He provides psychotherapy for children, adolescents, adults and families and specializes in working with unresolved situational and developmental trauma (EMDR and somatic treatment modalities), attachment issues, issues effecting minors, men’s issues, separation and divorce, sexual orientation and gender, and issues related to authority/autonomy and the impact of the legal process. In addition to his private practice, Joel is adjunct faculty at Antioch University Los Angeles in the Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology Program, where he teaches Professional Ethics & The Law, Neurobiology of Trauma, Child Advocacy & Social Policy, and Personality Theory. Prior to entering private practice, Joel practiced law for a number of years and advocated for the rights of children in Dependency Court and Delinquency Court as a Court-Appointed Special Advocate and Educational Surrogate.

Ruth Beaglehole
Ruth Beaglehole. Ruth was born in New Zealand where she gained a B.A. in Education and a Diploma in Preschool Teaching. After she settled in the U.S., Ruth founded a preschool for the children of working people in Echo Park and then became a parent educator for the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). After going back to school to earn her M.A. in Marriage, Family and Child Therapy, Ruth established a model program for teen parents within LAUSD, which she ran for 16 years. When Ruth retired, she founded the Center for Nonviolent Education and Parenting (now doing business as Echo Parenting & Education) to continue her work teaching parents and professionals nonviolent child-raising. In the last 2 years, Echo has partnered with Gabriella Grant of the California Center of Excellence for Trauma Informed Care to integrate trauma informed care into our parenting services and train professionals from the a variety of fields. Ruth has received many awards, including the 2010 Betty Fisher Award from the Los Angeles County Domestic Violence Council in recognition of her work in breaking the cycle of violence within families.
